Japan Makes Pledge to Reach Net Zero Emissions by 2050

28th October 2020

The Global CCS Institute welcomes Japan’s latest climate commitment, pledging to become carbon neutral by 2050.

In an announcement made by Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga, Japan will scale up its use of renewables and hydrogen as well as speed up research and development of key technologies, including Carbon Capture Use and Storage. While the government has yet to release detailed plans, new efforts will exceed commitments made in 2018, which vowed to reduce emissions by 80 per cent by mid-century and become carbon neutral as “soon as possible” in the second half of the century.

Japan’s announcement, which is in line with international climate targets laid out in the Paris, will be legislated into national law.
