CCS Talks: CarbonNet Project – A hub for climate change action and economic growth

Overview
Carbon capture and storage (CCS) hub and cluster networks, characterised by multiple emissions point sources utilising carbon dioxide (CO2) capture technology and shared CO2 transport and storage infrastructure, have the potential to drive significant large-scale CCS deployment and emissions reductions for Australia.
In South-East Australia, an excellent opportunity exists for the development of a CCS hub and cluster network in the Latrobe Valley region, and at the heart of this opportunity is the CarbonNet Project. The CarbonNet Project aims to establish a commercial-scale CCS network, bringing together multiple CO2 capture projects, transporting CO2 via a shared pipeline and injecting it deep underground, into offshore storage sites in the Bass Strait. Over the past six months, the CarbonNet Project has successfully hit a number of major milestones and is on track to enable a low emissions future for the state of Victoria and provide economic growth to the Gippsland region.
During this webinar, the Global CCS Institute will present key information on CCS hub and clusters, including global examples of current projects. Attendees will also hear directly from senior CarbonNet Project executives to share the impressive story around the Project; including the extensive investigation, overcoming regulatory hurdles and undertaking a comprehensive community engagement program. These presentations will be followed by a moderated panel discussion and a live audience Q&A session.

Steve Marshall, Operations Director, CarbonNet
With an impressive career in the international oil and gas exploration industry, Steve was is the role of Operations Director leading up to CarbonNet’s recent offshore appraisal well operations, and most recently has led the team as Acting Project Director.

Nick Hoffman, GeoScience Advisor, CarbonNet
Dr. Nick Hoffman is an expert geophysicist, sequence stratigrapher, and basin geologist with significant experience interpreting depositional environments, palaeobathymetry, structural evolution, and reservoir distribution from 3D and 2D seismic, and from well data. He has a Ph.D in Geophysics from Cambridge University and over 25 years’ international oil industry experience, including substantial time with BP in Europe, with BHP in Australia and worldwide, and leading a petroleum consultancy. He joined CarbonNet in 2011 as part of the start-up technical team to spearhead the geoscience evaluation over CarbonNet’s portfolio of nearshore CO2 sequestration targets, including roles as the subsurface lead and geoscience manager.
Nick has developed CarbonNet’s 3D probabilistic approach to forecasting fluid distribution in the subsurface and drafted the main technical text of CarbonNet’s preliminary application for the Declaration of an Identified Greenhouse Gas Storage Formation for the Pelican site.
Amanda Harding, Stakeholder Engagement and Communications Manager, CarbonNet
Amanda is the Stakeholder Engagement and Communications Manager for the CarbonNet Project. She holds a BA Journalism and MA Communication and has over 20 years’ experience working to engage audiences across the not-for-profit, government and commercial sectors. Amanda joined the CarbonNet Project in January 2019 and is the only Gippsland-based team member. A broadcaster and board member at Gippsland FM community radio station, she is well-positioned to understand local perceptions of the project and appreciates the national and international importance of CCS as a low-emissions pathway.
Alex Zapantis, General Manager - Commercial, Global CCS Institute
Alex joined the Global CCS Institute in 2016 and is accountable for managing the Institute’s consultancy services. He has over 12 years continuous experience working on issues related to climate change and CCS.
The first 12 years of Alex’s career were in Government and the university sector focussed on radiation management and safety, nuclear policy and environmental regulation and policy. His expertise is focussed on energy and climate change policy and carbon capture and storage, strategy development and risk analysis, industry and government engagement, public policy and regulation, industry and commercial analysis, external relations and media and communications.
Alex has a Degree in Applied Science with a major in Physics, a Graduate Diploma in Health & Medical Physics and an MBA.

Lucy Temple-Smith - Senior Advisor, Advocacy & Communications, Global CCS Institute
Lucy joined the Institute in November 2017 as a Senior Advocacy & Communications Advisor, based in our Melbourne office. Lucy works with the global Advocacy team to increase awareness of CCS as a vital climate change mitigation technology and, support the Institute’s mission of accelerating the deployment of CCS; in particular within the Asia Pacific region.
Prior to joining the Institute, Lucy held senior Communications and PR roles within the aged care, tourism and environment sectors. Lucy started her career in research, moving to Project Management, Marketing and Business Management roles in the Australian tourism industry and with a UK health policy think tank.
Lucy has a Bachelor of Business (Marketing) (Hons) from La Trobe University and a Graduate Diploma in Communications from Victoria University.
