World’s 19th large-scale CCS project begins operation in Australia

8th August 2019

On 8 August, Chevron Australia and the Gorgon Joint Venture participants announced the safe startup and operation of carbon dioxide injection at the Gorgon natural gas facility on Barrow Island, off the northwest coast of Western Australia - the world's 19th large-scale carbon capture and storage project.

When fully operational, this facility will be the largest geological storage facility in the world with a CO2 capture capacity of 3.4-4 Mtpa, reducing Gorgon’s greenhouse gas emissions by about 40 percent, or more than 100 million tonnes over the life of the injection project.

The Gorgon facility incorporates many leading design features aimed at maximising energy efficiency and minimising greenhouse gas emissions. In steady-state operations, Gorgon is anticipated to have the lowest greenhouse gas emissions intensity of any LNG project in Australia.
