Carbon Clean Solutions achieves major milestones in North American capture market

Institute member Carbon Clean Solutions have developed a novel process to capture CO2 using innovative chemistry refined through extensive field testing. The technology could provide a major reduction in both capex and equipment size, enabling a wider-scale commercial deployment of carbon capture systems globally. The company has recently made substantial strides in the North American market, achieving several important milestones there.
In January this year, it was announced that together with the Gas Technology Institute, the company’s US subsidiary, had been awarded $2.9m funding from the US Department of Energy, Office of Fossil Energy to test the feasibility of a new technology known as ROTA CAP. The project will design, build, and test a prototype demonstration unit at GTI’s Des Plaines, Illinois headquarters. Further field testing with coal-fired flue gas will be performed at the National Carbon Capture Center (NCCC) in Wilsonville, Alabama. The 30-month project will showcase a novel equipment design and advanced solvents that could reduce the levelised cost of carbon capture to the DOE’s target of $30 per ton or less. This comes after a successful test of an advanced carbon capture solvent in a pulverised coal post combustion application with the University of Kentucky's Center for Applied Research (CAER) in late 2018.
In parallel, Carbon Clean Solutions recently secured a US patent and received an issue of patent notification in Canada for its innovative capture technology. It is expected that the Canadian patent will be granted in the coming months.
On their recent US success, Carbon Clean Solutions CEO, Aniruddha Sharma, commented "We are excited to be expanding our R&D partnerships in the United States in the field of carbon capture and are positioning our technology to enable future mid-scale sized commercial projects that will take advantage of 45Q and other developing regulatory benefits".
