Saipem is a leading company in engineering, drilling and construction of major projects in the energy and infrastructure sectors. It is “One-Company” organized in five business divisions (Offshore E&C, Onshore E&C, Offshore Drilling, Onshore Drilling and XSight, dedicated to conceptual design). Saipem is a global solution provider with distinctive skills and competences and high-tech assets, which it uses to identify solutions aimed at satisfying customer requirements. Listed on the Milan Stock Exchange, it is present in over 60 countries worldwide and has 32 thousand employees of 120 different nationalities.

Sustainability is at the heart of everything Saipem does. Its way of doing business focuses unreservedly on a vision of sustainability for the long-term health of our environment, providing customers with cutting-edge, efficient and certified technological solutions, across all phases of the EPC (Engineering, Procurement, Construction) value chain.

Indeed, carbon-neutral operations throughout the entire EPC value chain is one of Saipem’s main priorities. With this aim, Saipem continues to adopt the most modern techniques and methods of work and smart working to minimize CO2 emissions, providing a portfolio of technological solutions and patents that achieve energy efficiency and reuse of emitted CO2.

Saipem is exploring new solutions to make the production of Oil & Gas resources more and more sustainable, with particular reference to Natural Gas, the cleanest fossil source. Saipem is building a technology portfolio to deal with purification, reservoirs, CO2 from combustion flue gas in power generation and industrial processes.

Furthermore, Saipem can master the whole Carbon Capture & Storage (CCS) value chain thanks to its solid background in process technology (mainly from Gas Reforming, Urea and heavy residue Gasification knowledge), pipeline fluid transportation over long distances, onshore and offshore drilling, including also CO2 injection.

Worldwide, Saipem has executed large EPC Projects for CO2 removal and Acid Gas Reinjection and its target is to be ready for the future deployment of CCS when the necessary regulatory measures are implemented worldwide. In this regard, Saipem is carrying out the FEED phase of the Northern Lights Norwegian CCS project for the challenging subsea CO2 transportation phase. Furthermore, CO2 re-utilization options are being intensely pursued as a first step of industrial exploitation of this kind of technology.

Saipem has signed a License Agreement with ITEA (a company of the Sofinter Group) to produce steam, electricity and pure CO2 by flexible exploitation of low rank fuels (such as waste, heavy oils, pet coke and several other feedstocks) by means of the oxy-combustion process. The Agreement gives Saipem access to this technology, allowing it to offer original and sustainable solutions to its clients. Saipem has also signed a Joint Development Agreement with Sustainable Energy Solutions (SES), a US start-up company specializing in CO2 cryogenic recovery, for the development of the application of SES’ proprietary Cryogenic Carbon Capture™ (CCC) technology to the treatment of high-CO2 content natural gas. Depending on local conditions, captured CO2 can be used for different applications, including enhanced oil recovery (EOR), biofuels or chemical production.

Saipem has extensive industrial experience in the design and implementation of CO2 reutilization plants for urea production using the proprietary licensed SnamprogettiTM Urea technology (136 worldwide licenses) and has been the EPC contractor for two methanol plants where CO2 is reused to increase production.

The development of innovative solutions for the sustainable treatment of waste stream or residual feedstock from the O&G industry (or other industries, in perspective also including recycling of plastics), with their consequent transformation into energy and/or valuable products, will become an important asset. The Company is continuously scouting technologies and testing innovative approaches in order to be a future leader in the field.

The application of novel approaches based on the adoption of renewable technologies applied to the development of Oil & Gas operations will also contribute to lowering overall CO2 emissions.
